• そして、私たちは非常に重要なことに気が付きます。それは、何よりも神様を愛することは神様からの贈り物です。努力すればすべてが達成できると教えられるこの世界では、最も重要なこと、本質的なことは、どんなに努力しても決して達成できないことに気づきます。それだけではなく、自分の力ではどうすることもできないことを、神様からの贈り物として受け取るのです。おそらく誰かがこう言うでしょう。「神様にそれを与えてもらい、私たちは他のことに専念します」。このように考えることは私たちの助けにはならず、むしろ私たちを神様から引き離すことにつながります。すべての贈り物は、真の贈り物であるためには、受け取らなければなりません。そして、贈り物を受け取るためには、それに対する準備をしなければなりません、腕を広げ、手を置き、おそらく顔で喜びを表現する必要があります…そうですね、私たちの努力が必要です。私たちが戒めを守るたびに、祈りに時間を捧げるたびに、ゆるしの秘跡に行って神様に許しを請うたびに、キリストのからだを受け取るたびに。つまり、神様に近づこうと努めるたびに、私たちは何よりも神様を愛することを可能にする神様からの贈り物を受け取る準備をしているのです。
• これを理解し、生きることが、今日、私たちを神様とのより深い交わりに導くと信じています。そして、頑張ればすべて自分でできるという考えを明確にするのに役立ちます。何よりも神様を愛するという賜物を私たちに与えてくださるよう神様に願いましょう。

1 – Ahora que ha habido elecciones en Japón, si nos preguntasen: “¿Qué es lo esencial en un gobierno?”. Quizá responderíamos: “Que trabaje por el bien común de todos los ciudadanos”. Si nos preguntasen por lo esencial de un matrimonio, quizá responderíamos: “Que se amen y se respeten mutuamente y estén abiertos a la vida”. Y si nos preguntan por lo esencial del cristianismo, ¿qué responderíamos? Quizá diríamos lo mismo que Jesús: “Amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas y al prójimo como a uno mismo”.

2 – ¿Qué significa “Amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas”? Compartiré una anécdota para explicar esto. Un amigo mío que ahora es sacerdote, cuando era un niño su madre le preguntó: “¿A quién quieres más a papá o a mamá?” Y mi amigo, que es un tipo muy listo, le respondió: “A Dios”. Y si la pregunta fuese de los hijos hacia los padres: “¿A quién quieres más a mí o a mi hermana?”, pues la respuesta creo yo que debería ser la misma: “A Dios”. Ahora os pregunto a los que sois padres y madres: “¿Podéis decir que queréis más a Dios que a vuestros hijos?”. Con los hijos se pasa mucho tiempo juntos, son carne de nuestra carne y hay un contacto directo con ellos. Es fácil quererlos y quererlos mucho. Pero no parece tan fácil pasar tanto tiempo con Dios, sentir que es carne de nuestra carne y tener un contacto directo con Él.

3 – Aquí reside un importante reto: ¿Cómo amar a Dios por encima de todas las cosas? Y, ¿quieres que te diga un secreto? ¡Es imposible! Sí, es imposible para ti y para mí. Vamos a tratar de entender esto. ¿Quiénes son los que quizá más han querido a Dios a lo largo de la historia? Podríamos decir que han sido los santos. Y dentro de los santos, quizá los mártires han amado tanto a Dios que hasta han entregado su vida como lo hizo Jesús. En la historia de Japón hay muchos mártires. Sobre todo japoneses, aunque también hay españoles, portugueses, italianos… Muchos de ellos han sido beatificados en los últimos años. Y en el camino hasta ser reconocido como un santo, un primer paso muy importante es ser reconocido como beato. Y para que eso suceda, hay que descubrir que esa persona ha tenido que ver con algún milagro. Normalmente pensamos en alguna curación milagrosa. Sin embargo, ninguno de los mártires que son beatos ha tenido que ver con ninguna curación milagrosa. Pero entonces, ¿cuál es el milagro que ha hecho que sean beatificados? Pues ese milagro ha sido su propio martirio. Así es, el martirio es un auténtico milagro. Es imposible para ti y para mí, pero es posible con la Gracia de Dios.

4 – Y así descubrimos algo muy importante: amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas es un don de Dios. En este mundo donde se nos enseña que con esfuerzo todo se consigue, descubrimos que lo más importante, lo esencial, por mucho que nos esforcemos, nunca lo alcanzaremos. Y no sólo eso, sino que lo que no podemos por nuestras propias fuerzas, lo recibimos como un regalo de Dios. Quizá alguno diga: “Pues si es un don de Dios, ¿para qué esforzarse? Que nos lo regale y mientras tanto nos dedicamos a otras cosas. Pensar así no nos ayuda, nos lleva más bien a separarnos de Dios. Todo regalo, para que sea verdaderamente un regalo, debe ser recibido. Y para recibir un regalo hay que disponerse para ello, hay que abrir los brazos, colocar las manos, quizá expresar alegría con el rostro… Pues ahí está nuestro esfuerzo. Cada vez que cumplimos los mandamientos, cada vez que dedicamos tiempo a la oración, cada vez que acudimos al sacramento de la confesión y le pedimos perdón a Dios, cada vez que recibimos el Cuerpo de Cristo; en definitiva, cada vez que nos esforzamos por estar cerca de Dios, estamos preparándonos para recibir ese regalo de Dios que hará posible amarle por encima de todas las cosas.

5 – Comprender y vivir esto, hoy en día, creo que nos lleva a una comunión más profunda con Dios. Y nos ayuda a aclarar esta idea de que lo podemos todo por nosotros mismos si nos esforzamos. Pidámosle a Dios que nos conceda este don de amarle por encima de todas las cosas.

1 – Now that there have been elections in Japan, if we were asked: “What is essential in a government?” we would perhaps answer: “That it works for the common good of all citizens.” If we were asked what is essential in a marriage, we would perhaps answer: “That they love and respect each other and are open to life.” And if we were asked what is essential in Christianity, what would we answer? We would perhaps say the same as Jesus: “To love God above all things and one’s neighbor as oneself.”

2 – What does “to love God above all things” mean? I will share an anecdote to explain this. A friend of mine who is now a priest, when he was a child his mother asked him: “Who do you love more, dad or mom?” And my friend, who is a very clever guy, answered: “God.” And if the question were from children to parents: “Who do you love more, me or my sister?”, then I think the answer should be the same: “God.” Now I ask you who are parents: “Can you say that you love God more than your children?” We spend a lot of time with our children, they are our flesh and we have direct contact with them. It is easy to love them and love them a lot. But it does not seem so easy to spend so much time with God, to feel that He is our flesh and to have direct contact with Him.

3 – Here lies an important challenge: How to love God above all things? And do you want me to tell you a secret? It is impossible! Yes, it is impossible for you and for me. Let us try to understand this. Who are those who have perhaps loved God the most throughout history? We could say that they have been the saints. And among the saints, perhaps the martyrs have loved God so much that they have even given their lives as Jesus did. In the history of Japan there are many martyrs. Above all Japanese, although there are also Spanish, Portuguese, Italian… Many of them have been beatified in recent years. And on the road to being recognized as a saint, a very important first step is to be recognized as a blessed. And for that to happen, you have to discover that that person has had something to do with some miracle. Normally we think of some miraculous healing. However, none of the martyrs who are blessed have had anything to do with any miraculous healing. But then, what is the miracle that has made them beatified? Well, that miracle has been their own martyrdom. That’s right, martyrdom is a true miracle. It is impossible for you and me, but it is possible with the Grace of God.

4 – And so we discover something very important: loving God above all things is a gift from God. In this world where we are taught that everything can be achieved with effort, we discover that the most important, the essential, no matter how hard we try, we will never achieve it. And not only that, but what we cannot achieve on our own, we receive as a gift from God. Perhaps someone will say: «Well, if it is a gift from God, why strive? Let him give it to us and in the meantime we dedicate ourselves to other things. Thinking like this does not help us, but rather leads us to separate ourselves from God. Every gift, to be truly a gift, must be received. And to receive a gift we must be ready for it, we must open our arms, place our hands, perhaps express joy with our face… Well, that is where our effort lies. Every time we fulfill the commandments, every time we dedicate time to prayer, every time we go to the sacrament of confession and ask God for forgiveness, every time we receive the Body of Christ; in short, every time we strive to be close to God, we are preparing ourselves to receive that gift from God that will make it possible to love him above all things.

5 – Understanding and living this, today, I believe, leads us to a deeper communion with God. And it helps us to clarify this idea that we can do everything by ourselves if we strive. Let us ask God to grant us this gift of loving him above all things.
