Welcome everyone and thank you for joining today on this very important day for me. Ten years ago, on this day, I received a gift from God that has marked my life forever. God called me to be a priest of Jesus Christ. Since I arrived in Japan, I have had to explain with my poor Japanese that being a priest is not my job. Being a priest is not a job, but a vocation, a call from God to be entirely for Him. And that gives meaning to my life. And of all the things that a priest of Jesus Christ does, there is one thing that shines above all others: the Eucharist. That is why, to celebrate this day, I wanted to do so by celebrating mass and then having lunch together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, from this place, the first part of the Mass begins, which has to do with the Word of God, with the Bible. Now we’re going to listen to a few passages from the Bible. Don’t worry if you don’t understand anything. Sometimes the Word of God is complex. But that’s what we priests are for… to explain the Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was born into a Christian family in the south of Spain. In a small village on the coast. I was baptised when I was 20 days old. When I was 9 years old I received the Body of Christ for the first time at mass. However, I never had much interest in the things of God. I went to mass on Sundays with my parents. But I didn’t really want to go. My parents made me go to mass. And I would spend the time at mass thinking about my own things. ———<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I went to university and studied engineering. I was a good student. I got good grades, I had money to go out with my friends and go to the cinema whenever I wanted. I had a girlfriend. Why did I need God if I had everything I wanted? And I went on living as if God didn’t exist. I never doubted that there was a God. But I thought that God and I were on parallel paths that never crossed. ———<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I finished university I got a job in Madrid. I moved there. And when I was 24, a friend invited me to a church event. And it was at that event that I met God, I met Jesus Christ. And from that meeting, my life began to change. I started praying, I started going to mass on my own, I started talking to a priest. And little by little, a joy that I had never had before appeared in my heart. And along with the joy, a desire. A desire to give my whole heart to God. ———<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I decided to leave my job as an engineer and enter the seminary. And 10 years ago, today, I received a very special gift from God. God gave me the gift to be a priest forever. Every day I thank God for this gift. But what does it mean to be a Catholic priest? After 10 years I have to know how to explain it in a simple way. ——–<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am now studying Japanese. I have been studying for 10 months now and these are the results \u00af_(\u30c4)_\/\u00af And today I am accompanied by one of my teachers. A philosophy teacher once told me: \u00abThere are things that, even if we are grateful for them, we can never be grateful enough. For example, thanking our parents for giving us life. Or thanking our teachers for teaching us\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to thank teachers because they have been an important help. For those who want to go to university, Japanese teachers help them. For others who want to be able to communicate better in everyday life, the teachers help them. In other words, Japanese teachers help us to respond to a desire that we carry in our hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the Catholic priest is like the teacher. But the Catholic priest helps us to respond to the deepest desires and longings of the heart. The desire to love and to be loved with infinite love. The desire for eternal life. The desire for a full meaning to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And how does the Catholic priest fulfil this mission? Quite simply: by bringing people closer to Jesus Christ. Because He is the answer to the deepest desires and longings of the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thank God for the Seminary in Madrid where I prepared myself to become a priest. I thank God for the two parishes in which I served in Madrid. And I thank God for the missionary vocation he has given me. I thank God for my brothers in the priesthood. For those in Madrid and for those He has given me the gift of meeting in Japan.
